Swim England

Value of Swimming Report 2019

4GLOBAL recently worked with Swim England, the national governing body for swimming in England, on its Value of Swimming Report. The research project outlines the significant impact water-based activity is making on the health and wellbeing of the nation.

Method

4GLOBAL utilised predictive modelling and outputs from the DataHub Social Value Calculator, developed by 4GLOBAL in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University and Experian, to show the monetary value that swimming makes to the community through savings in health and social care costs.

Findings

According to the findings in the report, underpinned by the figures generated by the DataHub Social Value Calculator, swimming is helping to save the NHS more than £357 million a year. The governing body will use the report to call on the Government and healthcare professionals to ensure they maximise the benefits of swimming to help people lead longer and healthier lives.

The report is the most thorough of its kind to have been carried out by a national governing body and now, Swim England is calling for more direct investment into the development of improved facilities and programmes up and down the country. With the creation of new facilities, this will help swimming deliver even greater health, wellbeing and social benefits.

The Social Value Calculator is a standardised tool for measuring the social value of activities that take place in leisure facilities. Data from members hitting the participation threshold via swimming activities across 1,040 sites between August 2018 and July 2019 was used and extrapolated to the total demand across England using further predictive modelling to show swimming’s impact on the prevention and treatment of physical and mental health conditions.
